Science Enrichment Programs
Designed for elementary school students in the
Portland/Metro region, lessons include hands-on
classroom as well as field activities. The Program is
facilitated by ECO’s Scientists in Residence, and
consists of a service learning component as well as
lessons aligned with Oregon state benchmarks.
Through exploration into Northwest ecology,
ECO builds stewardship and science literacy
within a school’s community.
Program Rationale
Research shows an early introduction to science makes students 2-3 times as likely to
pursue careers in science, technology, and math. Ecology is an extremely accessible
science for elementary school children and provides hands-on opportunities for early
scientists. The Program centers on the Scientific Process and involves project-based
learning, a student-centered, instructional model. Through habitat enhancement
activities, students develop the knowledge and skills to demonstrate an authentic
understanding of the process of science inquiry.
Partnerships & Sustainability
Science Enrichment Programs are strengthened
through partnerships with other established
organizations in the Metro area. ECO values
relationships with other organizations and strives
to build partnerships in an effort to increase the
resources available to schools. Additionally, ECO
actively seeks grant funds to ensure the
sustainability of a school’s Science Enrichment Program.
