Service Learning
Service learning combines academic classroom work with meaningful service. ECO provides optional ecology-focused service and experiential learning as an additional component of our Programs. Students use knowledge gained in ECO lessons to make a difference in their community. Projects are facilitated by Scientists in Residence, but driven by student work and enthusiasm. Previous service learning projects have included wetland and stream restoration, invasive plant removal, native plantings, as well as the creation of school natural areas.

Service learning projects are a wonderful way for students to contribute to positive changes in their schools and neighborhoods. Projects boost students’ self-esteem and give them a strong sense of belonging within their unique community. ECO Scientists in Residence facilitate the work during the project timeframe. In subsequent years, Scientists in Residence utilize the study site as an outdoor classroom for science exploration.
